		1998 HWCI WORLD CUP TOURNAMENT POOL '98

    FIVE RED CARDS HANDED OUT TODAY; FRANCE ADVANCES TO ROUND OF 16
    MLSBob continues to hold onto lead and perfect record (14-0-8)

	Soon to be in PASADENA, CA (smt)-  Benedict McCarthy
scored in the 52nd minute to give South Africa (0-1-1) a 1-1
tie with Denmark (1-0-1).  After the tying goal, five yellow
cards (seven total) and three red cards were handed out.
Two of the three Denmark subs were ejected less than 10 minutes
after entering the match.  South Africa's first substitute got
a yellow card 19 minutes after he played and another three minutes
later for a red card.  Ironically, only six fouls were called
on Denmark in the match, but picked up five cards (3 Y, 2 R).  In 
the other match in Group C, World Cup host France (2-0) routed 
Saudi Arabia (0-2), 4-0, to advance to the Round of 16.  Thierry
Henry had two of the goals, giving him 3 for the tournament.
France totally dominated:  Shots 31-3, Shots on goal/target 20-2, 
Corner kicks 8-3, Time of possession 35:25-17:37, Time in attacking
zone 22:59-7:25.  Two red cards (one to each team) were handed out.
Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Deayea had to make 10 saves.  The
Saudis became the first team to be officially eliminated from 
advancing to the Round of 16.  South Africa barely remains alive 
in Group C and would need to win big against Saudi Arabia and have
Denmark lose big to France next week for any chance.

	Here's a scary thing.  Fernando, the author of "Not-so-deep
Thoughts", had this to say yesterday:

You can't get more perfect than that.  Currently both his entries,
LE BIX and KING OF THE WORLD, sit tied for 2nd place.  There was a
little movement in the standings for the first time in three days
as TOM FUNG and SWEETTEETH missed picking France.  MLSBOB still
rides perfection and still holds a one-point lead over seven others.
TOM FUNG was the only one not to pick France making the Round of 16.
Remember, the points for picking the Round of 16 teams won't be 
included in the standings until AFTER the round-robin is over.
However, you can do the standings yourself by going to the HWCI
WC98 website and going to the "Downloads" section.  There you will
be able to download the Excel spreadsheet I use to do the 
standings.  

A red card there, a red card here, there a card, here a card...
