Wednesday, June 17, 1998 http://www.HWCI.com/wc98 Issue # 12.1.8 "Chile unlucky again..." 1998 HWCI WORLD CUP TOURNAMENT POOL '98 ======================================= ITALY TAKES GROUP B LEAD AND AUSTRIA STRIKES LATE AGAIN MLSBob remains unbeaten in 20 matches (13-0-7) EL SEGUNDO, CA (smt)- Just seconds before the match ended, Ivica Vastic scored to give Austria (0-0-2) to help them salvage another come-from-behind tie, 1-1, this time with Chile (0-0-2). Austria also scored in extra time before the match ended to tie Cameroon in their first match. Marcelo Salas scored his 3rd goal of the tournament for Chile in the 70th minute. Chile lost another victory in a disappointing trend. Chile was "robbed" of a win against Italy last week on a controversal hand-ball that gave Italy the game-tying penalty kick. Italy (1-0-1) struggled to take care of Cameroon (0-1-1) despite Cameroon being down a player for the second half. Christian Vieri's 2nd goal of the match and 3rd of the tournament in the 89th minute pushed the score to 3-0. Italy leads Group B with five points and a comfortable +3 goal differential. Cameroon, who disappointed many in the 1994 World Cup, is in last with one point. The "Indomitable Lions" will need to win their next game against Chile for any chance of advancing to the Round of 16. At work, I have loaded in the background SoccerLive! (http://worldcup.soccernet.com/u/soccer/worldcup98/soccerlive, then click on "Animated") which sort of gives you a graphical play-by-play announcing any fouls, corners, offsides, goals, goal kicks, and shots. One neat feature is that you can have a preference for home or away team. I chose Chile and proceeded with my work. When Chile scored, SoccerLive! would play someone saying "Goal!" followed by some celebration/anthem music, signifying that your team (in preferences) scored. So it was getting close to 10:30 am and I was thinking the match should be over by now. Then I hear "Goal!" and shortly followed by a Homer Simpson-like "Doh!" and I knew Austria had just tied it. Then a couple of whistle blows signified the match had ended. Not bad if you can't watch the match. Also, FIFA is not allowing any of the BBC Radio matches to be broadcast on Audionet (www.Audionet.com) live so SoccerLive! is the best I can do (damn you all who have TVs in the workplace). No changes in the standings since everyone picked Italy to win. Four people were spared losing a point when Austria tied the game. MLSBOB is still undefeated (13-0-7) after 20 matches. So far, there really has been only one real upset and that was Nigeria over Spain. Both matches in Group C will be played tomorrow with host France (1-0) meeting Saudi Arabia (0-1) and Denmark (1-0) taking on South Africa (0-1). If both France and Denmark win, they will both advance to the Round of 16. Sitting in my cubicle at Raytheon...
