Tuesday, June 16, 1998 http://www.HWCI.com/wc98 Issue # 11.1.7 "Brazil advances..." 1998 HWCI WORLD CUP TOURNAMENT POOL '98 ======================================= SCOTLAND STAYS ALIVE WHILE BRAZIL CLINCHES SPOT IN ROUND OF 16 MLSBob extends unbeaten streak to 18 matches (12-0-6) EL SEGUNDO, CA (smt)- Craig Burley scored in the 67th minute to help Scotland (0-1-1) stay alive in Group A by tying Norway (0-0-2), 1-1. The tie was the sixth of the tournament and the first since Saturday. Brazil (2-0-0) easily took care of Morocco (0-1-1), 3-0, to win Group A with one match to play. Brazil will play the 2nd place team from Group B on 6/27. Norway is in 2nd with 2 points but has to play Brazil next. Scotland and Morocco each have one point and the winner could very well advance to the Round of 16. MLSBOB remained perfect and maintained his one point lead over seven players tied for 2nd place. Although we know Brazil advances, I will not be calculating the points for those making the Round of 16 until after the first round is complete (June 26). But I will note which teams made the Round of 16 so you can keep track yourself. FYI, although it's in the original pool package, I've been asked this question once which means it'll be asked again; the way you earn points in the later rounds is whether or not your team makes it to the next round. It does not matter where in the bracket the team is placed. For example, BRA gets the 1A spot but the important thing is that BRA made it to the Round of 16. Therefore, regardless of whether or not you had BRA in your bracket as 1A (1st in Group A) or 2A (2nd in Group A), you still get the 3 points. The bracket was used as a guide so that you wouldn't inadvertantly pick two teams to make the semifinals who you picked would play in the quarterfinals. Both matches in Group B will be played tomorrow with unlucky Chile (0-0-1) vs Austria (0-0-1) and lucky Italy (0-0-1) taking on Cameroon (0-0-1). Gotta love this December weather in June...
