Monday, June 15, 1998 http://www.HWCI.com/wc98 Issue # 10.1.6 "Every team's played a match..." 1998 HWCI WORLD CUP TOURNAMENT POOL '98 ======================================= IT'S AN ALL-EUROPE AFFAIR AS ENGLAND, ROMANIA, AND GERMANY WIN With sixteen matches complete- MLSBob remains perfect EL SEGUNDO, CA (smt)- Alan Shearer's goal kick started England (1-0) to a 2-0 victory over Tunsia (0-1) in Group G action. His goal also sparked some more English hooligan-shinanigans in Marseille against some Tunsian families and fans watching the game on the beach. Romania (1-0) took care of Colombia (0-1), 1-0, on a late 1st half goal by Adrian Ilie. Germany (1-0) started off quickly for once with a goal in the 10th minute to hand the USA (0-1) a 2-0 defeat in Group F. The European teams (England, Romania, and Germany) beat teams from Africa (Tunsia), South America (Colombia), and North America (USA) today. Europe's sweep gives them a 7-2-6 record so far. Colombia' loss was South America's (2-1-2) only blemish. Mexico's victory was the lone CONCACAF win (1-2-0) while Nigeria's upset win was the lone African win (1-2-2). An Asian team has yet to win (0-4-0). After four of the first five matches ended in a draw, only one of the last 11 ended that way. I watched the 2nd half of the US-Germany game during lunch on a snow-infested color TV in the cafe across from my building. It looked like Germany was content with a 1-0 victory then the US got a couple of unlucky bounces. Even down 2-0, I was hoping for some of that Korean comeback they did against Germany in the first round in the last World Cup, nearly tying the Germans after being down 3-0 late in the second half. Oh, well. My main question was "Where was Preki"? Does anyone remember the Gold Cup and his clutch goals, one vs a so-so team named Brazil? He is not a starter but he is perfect for a 2nd half substitution as his shots would have more on goal than the shots the US had late in the game. There's nothing more frustrating watching a game than when the opposing goalkeeper doesn't have to work (Hedjuk's header notwithstanding) at any of our shots. Romania's win left MLSBOB sitting alone atop the pool standings with 11 wins (in 11 non-drawn matches). Seven sit in 2nd place with 10 points. The first phase of the first round is complete as every team has played one match. The second matches of each team begins tomorrow with Group A: Brazil vs Morocco and Scotland vs Norway. Where was Preki?...
