BOSTON, MA (smt)- Well, I didn't get to watch a lot games but I did see some of my teams bite the dust. Oh, well. The favorites once gain dominated play although the top seeds had tougher games than yesterday. Easy wins? Just #4S-Virginia, #5MW-USC, #1MW-Florida, #5S-Tennessee, and #1W-Kansas. #7MW-UNLV, #2MW-Wisconsin (rallying from a 25-7 deficit), #2S-Memphis, #7S-Nevada, #3MW-Oregon, #4E-Texas, #4W-Southern Illinois, #8W-Kentucky (possibly saving the Tubby Smith's job), and #5W-Virginia Tech all held on to slim wins. The Midwest provided the two upsets as #11-Winthrop blew a 20-pt lead but beat #6-Notre Dame while #9-Purdue held off #8-Arizona.
Tenn (121), Florida (112), and Kansas (107) became the first teams to top the century mark while Nevada and #10S-Creighton played the first overtime game of 2007. Winthrop sounds like a team who has upset Kansas at one time (which small conference team hasn't?) but it was their first-ever NCAA tourney win. For the first time since 2000, no #12 seed won and of the five upsets, three were #9 seeds. Although many teams have struggled, just nine of the 32 games have been decided by single digits with just four decided by 3 pts or less including none by a single point. All in all, a lackluster first round. And pool reflects that (which is a good thing in a sense that everyone is still in it).
Of the 98 entries (unofficial), 97 have at least 7 of 8 Elite 8 teams left and just four have lost one Final Four team. So it's still wide open. HALEY'S COMETS (66th-Tied, 46 pts) is in the worst shape losing Georgia Tech in his Final Four and has just 11 of 16 Sweet 16 teams left.
DC944, VAN&SAM, and THAI SPICE lead with 58 pts (29-3 record) with 8 just two points behind. THAI SPICE and DINGUS (4th-T, 56) went 15-1 for the day, tying a record set by 11 others. SOURCE and DAVYESPY are tied for last with 38 pts. POSH SPICE'S GIGOLO (92nd-T, 42) and MIZER WIZARD (66th-T, 46) both scored five more wins than yesterday. Five entries did four wins worse than yesterday. It's all still fluid.
An amazing 38 picked Winthrop while just 33 picked Purdue. Other splitters went to UNLV (picked by just 38 despite the #7 seed) and Kentucky (43).
