2006 NCAA Champions | |
The University of Florida Gators (33-6) |
Monday, April 3, 2006 Issue # 18.6.1 "Florida Bruises Bruins" [ Home ] [ Updates ]
CERRITOS, CA (smt)- Joakim Noah had five (!) of his six blocks in the
first half to lead the #3MW-Florida Gators (33-6) to a 73-57 win over
the #2W-UCLA Bruins (32-7) to capture their first NCAA championship.
The Gators had 10 blocks overall and built up a 20-point lead early in
the second half. UCLA never got the game within single digits in the
second half and lost for only the second time in a championship game
(11-2). Florida ends on a 11-game winning after staring the season
with a 17-game win streak. Florida capped what was one of the most
lackluster Final Fours with no losing team getting closer than nine
points after the first minute of the second half.
In a HWCI first, a self-proclaimed prophecy as a nickname
wins the
pool title. Ken B (GATORS NEVER CHOKE (120 pts)), with a
Weighted
Point Average of 0.194 (of 1.000), 33rd of 34 qualified entries, ran
and survived with Florida to a $415 payday. He was the only one to
pick Florida as nine who had UCLA went home empty-handed. Ken picks
up the largest-ever prize. Jake P (LORENZO MATA (113)) won the $200
2nd place prize in his third year and probably wishes he
put UCLA one
round further to win 1st. John C (JINX (110)), who was 28th best of
34 (0.422), also waited 7 years to win money for the first time,
picking up $140 for 3rd place. The Bruin alum also could've put UCLA
into the final. Pat N (AGENT 86 OF CONTROL (108)) may be starting a
tradition, as he won 4th place ($95) for the second straight year (in
his 4th year), edging out Cliff T (BELUCKY1) in the tiebreaker.
With Florida's win, the SEC picked up its 13th win. But
no one picked
the SEC with 13 so for the second straight year no one wins the Bonus
Prize (with the $40 being distributed evenly to the top 4 prizes).
The 120 pts for the winner was the lowest since MAX got 116 in winning
the 1997 HWCI NCAA Pool. The 90.8 point average and 35.4 wins (of 63)
were the lowest ever.
So an overall great tournament with a fizz of a finish.

So traveling is not a violation? Or does Florida have three feet?...
