Thursday, March 20, 2003 Issue # 3.1.1 "Pac-10 perfect, so are 2 entries" [ Home | Updates ]
CERRITOS, CA (smt)- #6W-Creighton and #4MW-Dayton dug themselves into deep second half holes (24 and 19 points, respectively) and their late rallies fell short to victorious #11W-Central Michigan and #13MW-Tulsa, respectively. #9W-Gonzaga and #10W-Arizona St. pulled off minor upsets. #3MW-Marquette, #5S-UConn, #6MW-Missouri, #4S-Stanford, #4W-Illinois, #5W-Notre Dame, #2W-Kansas, and #3W-Duke all played tight games before pulling off the win. #8E-Cal denied #9E-NC St. of reliving a miracle, a la their NCAA Championship victory 20 years ago, winning in overtime. #1W-Arizona, #1E-Oklahoma, and #5MW-Wisconsin had easy wins. All four Pac-10 teams that were eliminated in the 1st or 2nd round of their tournament won today. Pac-10 Tournament champ Oregon plays tomorrow.
For the first time in HWCI NCAA history, someone went a perfect 16-0 (in either 1st Round day). BLUEBERRY (1st-Tied, 32 pts) and BLOOMERS123 (1st-T, 32) get the honors. Two others (BIG LUTHER and SUSIE Q) went 15-1, which was the previous record. GHOST OF VALVANO and TERMINATOR (62nd-T, 16) are tied for last. I AM FABIO (55th-T, 10) is the only person so far to lose a Final Four team (Memphis). It's still early though, and tomorrow is another day.
BYU's loss eliminates the potential pool headache of switching teams in the bracket in the middle of the tournament. Whew! [Added 3/21]
Kentucky is the favorite with this group with 32 entries thinking they'll be the 2003 Champ. Arizona is 2nd (13 entries), Kansas is 3rd (4), and Duke is 4th (2); in fact, 54 of the 63 entries have the winner coming from the MIDWEST/WEST side of the bracket. I'm surprised no one picked Texas.
The prize breakdown and the determination of "bonus" awards will be announced later when the entries become official. If you have questions on what type of "bonus" awards are being considered, please post your thoughts on our discussion board.
