LA MIRADA/EL SEGUNDO, CA (smt)-- The 7th Annual HWCI NCAA Pool will crown a 7th different champion as early as Saturday night and at least three people will get their first taste of finishing in the money. Lisa F. (ARMIN TAMZARIAN (6th-Tied, 113 pts)) is the only person trying to win money twice (1999-1st). Scott T.'s run of three consecutive years finishing in the money (1998-3rd, 1999-2nd, 2000-3rd) will end this year. Just a reminder that first place nets a record $275, 2nd place will get $150, 3rd place will receive $100, and the lucky 4th place winner will get a hearty $65 ($70 was the first place prize in 1995).

Three people have a 1 in 4 chance of winning first place. BINGO (120) was one of two people to go 4-for-4 the past two days to go from tied for 10th place to first place. Robinson C.'s last of three entries still alive, TEAM SAMURAI (2nd, 118), also has a 75% chance of winning money. DUKKIE (9th-T, 112) will try to ride out Maryland's championship to the grand prize. Two others have one chance for first place: ZERV THE GREEK (5th, 115) and PEEPS (14th-T, 110).

Seven others have a chance to win some money. Sunday was a disaster for those at the top- NICKNAME went from 1st place to eliminated (9th-T, 112); HE HATE ME TOO went from tied for 2nd to eliminated (14th-T, 110); KIM went from tied for 2nd to no better than finishing in 4th place (4th, 116). On the flip side, the past two days have seen PEEPS jump from tied for 36th place to tied for 14th place with still a chance for first place.

What it boils down to is that if Michigan St. and Duke win their semifinal games, BINGO wins the pool. If Duke and Arizona win, TEAM SUMARAI wins the $275 prize. If Maryland is crowned the 2001 NCAA Champion, DUKKIE will be dancing in the streets. ZERV THE GREEK wins if Michigan St. beats Maryland in the Final and PEEPS will cap an incredible comeback if Arizona beats Maryland in the Final.
