KENTUCKY GETS LUCKY AGAINST STANFORD; UTAH BUILDS LEAD IT NEVER GAVE UP
It will be Anna Come Lately, Caveman, and The Fabone for the top 3 spots

#3MW Stanford lost one of their men to a 5th foul on a ticky-tack call,
did not get the possession after Kentucky missed a slam dunk (how?),
and got a "jump ball" only to have possession arrow pointing Kentucky's
way all in the overtime period and almost pulled it off anyway. But,
it will be #2S Kentucky who will go to Monday's Championship Game, their
3rd straight trip to the Finals.

Had Stanford made it, we could have had a #3 seed matchup as #3W Utah
took down their 2nd straight #1 seed (#1W Arizona being the other). Utah
built a 28-12 lead over #1E North Carolina and never relenquished the lead,
although UNC came within two points late in the game. UNC's atrocious
shooting, both from the free throw line, normal range, and 3-point range
spelled their doom. In the year where all four #1 seeds were supposed
to make it to the Final 4, not one will now make it to the Final.

ANNA COME LATELY rode Utah's giant-killers all the way to the $150
jackpot. As the only one who picked Utah to get past Arizona, the
extra 14 points made her the "king (er.. queen) of the world" (quoting
James Cameron quoting Jack Dawson quoting Cameron). ANNA becomes
our first female winner of any prize. CAVEMAN will take home the $70
prize, and yours truly, THE FABONE will take home $40, which only pays
for the previous $40 I've put in the past 4 years. However, the $20
fourth-place prize won't be decided until literally the last basket of
Monday night. Four people are vying for that prize and the total points
in the Final will determine the winner. Also, it will determine winners
for 8th place, 12th place (3-way tie), 16th place, and 25th place.
SHAKERMAKER and THE FLYING ELVI, rivals both on and off the pool, will
forever be tied for 19th place, since both picked 160 points as the
tiebreaker.
SLAVE TO BIG SIX will hold on to the 28th and final spot
with only 83 points. UTHPOPE (24th, 92) gets the "Kind-of-Brian Clause"
award for getting zero points in the last three rounds. BIX'S PIX'S
(11th, 105) is the only person to get at least 40 wins in each of the
four pools. CAVEMAN wins money in both times he entered (3rd, $30 in '96)
to increase his total earnings to $100. ANNA is now our biggest money
earner, with her $150 overtaking JABIAN III's $145 total ($110 in '95,
$35 in '97). Actually, JABIAN III (21st, 99) took the 2nd biggest
fall (3rd in '97) after LENNY (tied 25th, 91) who fell from 6th in '97.
Meanwhile, BUCKEYE MIKE (tied 4th, 108) made the biggest jump from his
last place (22nd) finish last year and THE FABONE went from 13th to 3rd.
BIX'S PIX'S makes his slow descent after finishing 1st in '95 (5th in
'96, 7th in '97, 11th in '98).

The Tiebreaking Procedure
1. Total points in Championship match on Monday, March 30, 1998- whoever gets closest to the total points tiebreaker (e.g., if PlayerA picked 120 and PlayerB picked 140, then under 130 will mean PlayerA wins tiebreaker; over 130 means PlayerB wins tiebreaker; and 130 would result in a tie)
2. if still tied, then players tied shall split prize money (e.g., if 2 players end up tied for 2nd place, then they will split 2nd and 3rd place prize money ($70+$40=$110) and each will get $55 each; if 2 players tie for 4th place, then each will split 4th place prize money ($10 each))

48 points is the lowest total of any leader after Round 1 (previous three years had leaders with 52 points)... this year was the first year that at least one person picked each of the 32 first-round games correctly- and that continued into the first four games completed on 3/15 (44 straight) before Valpo beat Florida St... ANNA COME LATELY (after Monday) will tie JAYBIAN's 1996 record of leading after 5 of the 6 rounds of play.
