FOURTH HWCI OFFICIAL BETTING POOL- NCAA TOURNAMENT `98
=========================

Subject: NCAA Pool Time!

Esteemed Colleagues,

You are officially invited to join the 4th annual HWCI NCAA Tournament
Pool. Yes, it's that time of year again, you knew it was coming. The
tournament seedings are already out, so time is of the essence. Here are
the facts:

The pool is open to all who are interested, so feel free to forward this
e-mail to others. The entry fee is $10, and the picks are due next
Thursday, March 12. The entry payment deadline is flexible. Basically, if
you were invited to join, we know you’re good for the 10 bucks, so don’t
sweat it. The scoring is weighted by round and not by seeds, so picking
underdogs correctly will give you the same amount of points as picking the
favorite correctly. Of course, by picking a low seed victory correctly,
you will be getting points that most entrants won’t, so it still may be
worth it. The point distribution is as follows:

2 points for each 1st round win
3 points for each 2nd round win
4 points for each 3rd round win
6 points for each 4th round win
8 points for each 5th round win
12 points for picking the NCAA Champion

Last year there was a first, second, and third place prize. We had $220.00
in the pot, first place winning $125, second place winning $60, and third
place taking $35. This year we are hoping to increase participation so
that we can have the top four places receive prizes.

There are two ways to send us your picks:

1) Get a copy of the brackets from a newspaper or wherever you can find
it, fill out the winners, zerox the brackets, and send the picks in via
snail mail. Send them to

La Mirada, CA 90638

Remember, the letter must be postmarked by March 12. If you must fax the
picks, we might be able to arrange for that. Just let us know in advance.
For tie-breaker purposes, you will also need to send us a prediction for
the total score in the final game. Also, for amusement purposes, you need
to send us a nickname by which you will be represented in the standings.
For instance, the last three years I have gone by the handle "The Mighty
Mobelfakta", and I will again be assuming that identity this year, so that
name’s taken, think of another one.

2) Type out your selections and, send them to us via e-mail. This is the
probably the most efficient way of sending your picks:

Nickname:
Final game total score:
NCAA Champion:
Runner-up:
Final Four losers (round 5):
Round 4 losers (4 teams):
Round 3 losers (8 teams):
Round 2 losers (16 teams):

That should cover all the games. For insurance purposes, you should send
the picks to both me ([email protected]) and Scott ([email protected]),
your humble tourney pool administrators.

"How will I keep track of pool standings?" you must be wondering. Well,
after each day’s action, updates will be posted at
http://www.jps.net/dfeng/ncaa and sent out via e-mail. Also, as soon as
all the picks are in, we will send out a listing of everybody’s picks, so
that you know we’re on the level. Remember, if you have any question,
don't hesitate to e-mail either Scott or me. The website may also be
helpful. That’s all for now, get your hands on those tournament brackets
and have fun!

that is all,

dfeng
