3/16/97, Issue # 6.2.2 "The little Chattanooga that could"

    The Sweet Sixteen will feature a #14 seed, two #10 seeds, and three #6 seeds causing only BAD ASS I, RODERICK, and MAX to achieve a 4-4 record on Sunday.  All of the above seeds won on Sunday except #6 Iowa St.  Only #10 Texas was seeded higher than its opponent, #15 Coppin St. (in Baltimore, FYI), which showed a lot of heart and nearly upset Texas.  The inexperience of Coppin St. both helped and hindered them. An unnecessary three-point attempt actually went in to close the gap to one, then they rushed a shot to try go ahead in the final seconds, but it was blocked.  The subsequent inbound pass was stolen and time ran out.  Only K-DOGG and BAD ASS I picked Texas to reach the Sweet Sixteen.  Coppin State almost became the first #15 seed to make it past the second round.

    #1 Minnesota quieted critics momentarily by breezing past Temple. #3 New Mexico fell, partially due to two quick and dumb fouls by NM's Kenny Thomas, who fouled out.  He left with the stupidest grin (as if saying "Did I do that?") and #6 Louisville held on to win.  #2 Duke became the second two-seed to not reach the third round.  TODD SMITH (now known as FRODO) did not pick Duke to make it, but he thought Marquette would do the job, not #10 Providence.  #14 Tennessee-Chattanooga  becomes this year's Cinderella team knocking out #6 Illinois.  #6 Stanford became the fourth Pac-10 team to make the Sweet Sixteen (again, only FRODO picked Stanford), upsetting #3 Wake Forest.  #4 Clemson and #2 Utah added some stability amongst all the upsets.

    As for the pool, JAYBIAN II went just 3-5 for the day but ended up with a high of 11 correct in Round 2 to keep the lead with 83 points, four more than BAD ASS I.  Nine are within ten points of the leader. BAD ASS II is also close-by tied for fourth.  THE FLYING ELVI is third with 77 points and separated from SHARKBABY, who fell hard from second to seventh and can't finish higher than third.  LOCBOY and THE MIGHTY MOBELFAKTA can't win the big prize of $125.  THE FABONE and COWGIRL IN LOVE, tied for 20th in points with 63, can still finish first, albeit unlikely.  RHODES, EZRA, and BUCKEYE MIKE all have more points than these two but are eliminated from the prize money.  Last place KARL CHILDERS is also eliminated with a record-low 58 points after two rounds.  All four eliminated have Kansas as their top pick.

    UPDATES:  DUKE FAN's picks have been finally cleared up, after the transfer from Mac to PC produced different results.  Amazingly, nothing changes.  His score is the same.  The four eliminated are still so.  If you are keeping track, however, note his different Elite 8 and Final Four picks... TODD SMITH has chosen the nickname "FRODO"... DUKE FAN will remain "DUKE FAN"--- not to be confused with just "DUKE", Dennis' entry... Dennis has chosen "174" to be his magic number in case of a tie for both of his entries.
