3/15/97, Issue # 5.2.1 "The Return of the Jaybian"

 Defending HWCI NCAA Tournament Pool Champion JAYBIAN II reeled off an HWCI record-tying perfect 8-0 Saturday to vault into a six point lead with 74 points.  No one else had more than six correct.  Both BAD ASS I and DUKE fell from first to a tie for fourth with 68 points.  #1 North Carolina got its coach Dean Smith his NCAA record 877th win to start off the day.  #1 Kansas and #1 Kentucky both had to battle midway in the second half before advancing to the Sweet Sixteen.  The biggest upset was #6 Iowa State taking care of #3 Cincy, where six entrants had them in their Final Four (besides JAYBIAN II, only SHARKBABY pegged this one).  #2 UCLA put on another offensive showing in its win over #7 Xavier. BUCKEYE MIKE was the only one not to pick UCLA into the third round.  Despite not making crucial free throws, #4 St. Joeseph won in overtime over #5 BC.  #12 College of Charleston's 23-game win streak ended, but not without a fight, nearly coming back from seven points down in the last minute against #4 Arizona.  Only three people (JAYBIAN II, TODD SMITH, and DUKE FAN) foresaw #5 Cal making it to the Sweet Sixteen.

    Tomorrow will finally show who is still in the running for the top three spots.  THE FABONE (54 pts) and KARL CHILDERS (52) are at the bottom, but we won't know if they're eliminated until after tomorrow's games.  For a little history, both Mark (now dubbed SHARKBABY) and Brian (now as THE FLYING ELVI) have ended the past two HWCI NCAA Pools with the exact number of points.  So guess what?  They are tied for second with 68 points. They were also tied after the first round.  No one has an intact Elite Eight left and so far, seven have had all their Final Four teams winning today.
