GOLETA,
CA (smt) - While the Group Stage played out as most expected, the Round of 16
produced chaos and unbelievable finishes. There were 29 goals (3.63/match)
with six of those scored in Extra Time (ET). Half the matches went to ET
but just one went to the Penalty Shootout (PSO). Two teams came back from
3-1 deficits with less than 10 minutes left to force ET while Red Cards doomed
two teams. Substitutes scored 8 times (more than the 6 in the first 36
matches) while yet another own goal happened (9 for the tourney). Half the
group winners lost and three of the four 3rd place teams advanced. All 3
Group F teams (from the Group of Death) lost while Group B was the only group
with its top 2 teams advancing.
2B-Denmark blew out 2A-Wales 4-0 while 3D-Czech Rep and 1D-England posted 2-0 shutouts, the former scoring both goals while up a man and the latter scoring both goals in the last 15 minutes. 1B-Belgium held on to a 1-0 win. 1A-Italy and 2C-Austria played to a nil-nil regulation draw but ITA outscored AUT 2-1 in ET. 3C-Ukraine took advantage of a 1E-Sweden red card in the ET to score a stoppage time winner in ET, winning 2-1.
Monday was the craziest day as both matches featured the underdog scoring first only to see the favorite score 3 straight before rallying with two goals in the last 10 minutes to tie it at 3-3. But while 2E-Spain scored twice in ET to beat 2D-Croatia 5-3, 1F-France and 3A-Switzerland held firm in ET to go to the PSO. While SUI missed a PK in the match that could've put them up 2-0, they hit all 5 spot kicks and FRA was matching until the last kick which was saved.
The heavy favorite FRA to win it all plus group winners 1C-Netherlands and SWE and heavyweights 2F-Germany and reigning Euro champ 3F-Portugal all lost. ITA, ENG, and BEL are now the top favorites to win it all but BEL and ITA play each other in the quarterfinal. ENG will have to win away from Wembley Stadium for the first time as they play their quarterfinal in Rome vs UKR.
23 got 5 of the 8 quarterfinalists correct while 9 just got 3. I Kante Lose (5th-Tied, 84) was the only one to pick CZE and Fabio (20th-T, 78) was the only one to pick UKR. Slyelf remains in the lead by 2 pts (90) with FrankfromSeattle 2nd with 88. Despite being tied for 10th (82), Gli Azzurri Forza Roma (3rd-T, 87) has the best chance to win the pool (25.0%) while Slyelf has the best chance at and money (50.8%). 15 13 can still win the pool and 26 25 entries can still finish in the top 4 money spots.

Bits 'n Bobs - the SUI-TUR match featured 16 shots on goal (10 by SUI) resulting in 4 goals (3 by SUI)... TUR's GK was peppered with 26 shots on goal, saving 18... On Saturday, 32 got DEN into the Quarters eliminating our first two entries entry (Futbol Fabone Twelf (47th-T, 69) and Otesgo 2 (47th-T)) and leaving 41 37 who can win the pool; 48 got ITA (DenMarkMyTerritory only one who didn't) which prevented two more from winning the pool, leaving 39; 31 got both correct and 18 got 1 of 2; No change at the top as Slyelf still leads with 78 pts.... on Sunday, I Kante Lose was the only one to pick CZE into the Quarters; two lost NED in their Final; 3 eliminated (45) and 4 can't win pool (33); 46 got BEL while 4 lost POR as their champ (14 had them in the Final); I Kante Lose went 2-0 (but can't win the pool) while 3 went 0-2; 29 have 3 Quarterfinalists while 20 have two; 6 more can't win money (39) while 8 more can't win the pool (25); FrankfromSeattle has the best chance at winning the pool (14.4%) and money (36.9%) but Slyelf still leads by two (82 pts)... on Monday, 47 had ESP into the Qtrs which prevented 3 from winning the pool (22); four picked SUI which eliminated four from winning (35) and four from winning the pool (18); four went 2-0 while two went 0-2; after six R16 matches, 31 are 4-2 and 18 are 3-3; no change at the top with Slyelf still leading by 2 pts (86); with FRA hurting many entries (19 had them winning it all and 39 in the Semis), Slyelf (ENG as champ) now has the best chance at money (53.1%) and winning the pool (15.8%)... on Tuesday, 31 picked ENG eliminating 5 (30) and preventing 4 from winning the pool (14); 3 lost GER as their champ; Fabio was the only one to pick UKR eliminating 5 (25) and one from winning the pool (13); 32 went 1-1 while 17 went 0-2....
